Gounod’s March of a Marionette is a comical solo set in G minor, with a brief interlude in G major. While the “two flat” key signature will be familiar to young soloists, it will be important for them to notice the difference between Major and minor modes. Set in a 6/8 meter, this solo also brings attention to performing in a non-duple meter that follows a repetitive feel with 8th notes and 8th rests. While the highest note, A4, appears more than once, these notes are marked optional with the larger printed notes being an octave lower. This solo would also be an excellent piece for introducing notes in the fifth position, such as F# and C#.
