Written in 1964, this sonata is written in a modern classical style with tonal sections and complex harmonies that will push the soloist’s ear and their practice sessions. The first movement is quick with several meter changes including 2/4, 3/8, 4/8, 7/8, and 5/8. In addition, the first movement switches key signatures quite often, sometimes without notice according to the Southern Music edition. Fortunately, the main theme occurs frequently through this riveting movement. The second movement is marked “Adagio” and is the only movement without a tempo marking. The suggested recording performs this movement with the eighth note equaling 80 bpm. With a lyrical flow, it will be important for the soloist to pay attention to the many accidentals marked throughout this movement. The third movement starts in 5/4 and should be felt in two with the quarter note staying the same when meters change. Key signatures fluctuate throughout this movement. In true “Rondo” form, this movement shifts the theme around with the sonata ending in a heroic form on a Bb4.
