William Boyce’s Gavotte from Symphony No. 4 is a work that would be an excellent beginner solo for a trombonist. Though the half note is marked 72 bpm, this work contains a melodic line that does not shy away from fundamental concepts and practice. With a small number of accidentals, the range does not go above an F4, allowing the performer to play in a register that is comfortable to allow focus on good tone production with maintaining a steady tempo. Two sections have brief repeats which can lead to interpretation in volume for louder and softer playing. Since many tenuto and staccato marking occur almost for every note, the performer will want to exaggerate these markings to offer distinction through the music.
