Gavotte and Hornpipe by Henry Purcell is an excellent introduction to beginning soloists in regards to playing in the Baroque style. While the solo does not contain performance practice ornamentation, such as grace notes, grupettos, etc., it will still hold the soloist to play a consistent tempo in cut time. The second portion of the solo, Hornpipe, is marked in 3/2 with the half note still receiving the primary beat. Range should not be an issue as the work is written between C3 and G4. No actual tempo marking is given but both sections are played at a brisk tempo since the half note is marked 72 bpm. The soloist will want to pay attention to the musical roadmap with the D.C. al Fine at the end of the written music.
