As one of Arthur Pryor’s easier trombone solos, this work is an excellent introduction of a “Pryor solo” for the developing soloist. In the spirit of a waltz, Starlight follows an A-B-A form with the melody being repeated in the first section. Starting in the key of F Major, the B “Trio” section, switches to Bb Major. Just before the final A section, the second cadenza is written out and allows the soloist to display their personal creativity and flair. Range of pitch is not an issue, but the soloist needs to have a strong mid-to-high register for the repeated F4, G4, and the optional Bb4.
