Originally written for trombone and military band, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Concerto is one of the few compositions for trombone by a major composer. Several editions are published that feature slight variations. For instance, it is tradition to take the opening phrase up one octave. The goal in the first movement is to maintain tempo and add variety to the opening theme each time it occurs within the movement. The second movement can either be played in a fast six or slow slow feel. Be aware of the Cbs that frequently appear. The third movement is march-like in its speed and with its consistent sixteenth-note runs. The cadenza allows the soloist to really take time and add their personal creativity to this section with a soft Bb1 at the end of the virtuosic section.
