Sonatina by Robert W. Jones

Robert W. Jones’ Sonatina is filled with a technical flair that compliments lyrical prowess. The first movement begins with sweeping melodies at fortissimo that has the performer reach A4 multiple times. While the movement predominantly stays in 4/4, there are brief instances where 2/4 and 7/8 are sprinkled in the movement. Sixteenth notes occur as well with the first movement ending with a G4 trill for two beats. The second movement begins with a muted 3/2 meter that allows for full, expressive lyricism. While some trombone guides say this work is a 3-movement piece, a recording by Ron Babcock includes the “Allegro ma energico” as a part of the second movement [1]. The 6/8 time signature in this faster section is brisk with several jolts of articulation, concluding with glissando rips to G4 in the final measures.
