Written in 1960, Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 13 is from a collection of 18 hymn-and-fuguing works by Henry Cowell. In this modern take on early American music, the “Hymn” portion is very lyrical and tonal with the quarter note marked at 112 bpm but has a melodic feel in two. The “Fuguing Tune” features running eighth notes in both diatonic and modal fashion. A solid ear for pitch and intervals will be needed to successfully perform the second half of this solo. Accidentals occur often in the second half so a keen sense of awareness and attention to detail is necessary to correctly play the pitches. Both tenor and bass clefs are used throughout both sections. Even though this solo is scored as a “Level 3” special consideration should be given for its level of difficulty.
