Tomasi’s Concerto for trombone is one of the quintessential works that shows everything the trombone is known as a soloistic instrument. From the opening notes, with its “tip of the hat” to Tommy Dorsey’s Trombonology, to the use of straight and cup mutes in the second movement, this concerto takes the soloist on a journey of French style. Lyrical playing at a fast tempo is found in the first movement with a slow test of endurance in the second movement. The third movement races through technical passages. Be aware that bass, tenor, and treble clefs are used frequently throughout the work.
