Cavatine is one of the few works written for trombone by a significant composer. Composed in 1915, this work will test the soloist to perform in a French musical style on both spectrums of technicality and lyricism. With only two major sections, Allegro and Andantino, the ABA form allows the soloist to experiment with dynamics and articulation. Although the total score is marked for Level 3, the soloist will need to consider that traditionally the Allegro sections are played in 1 instead of 3/4. Tenor clef is used frequently throughout the work and the soloist will need to play Pedal Bb, A, and Ab. The last note is marked as a Db5 with the option to play an Ab4 so range could be a concern with the soloist’s endurance.
