Emerald by Hale Ascher VanderCook

While VanderCook’s Ruby primarily contains quarter notes and eighth notes, Emerald, the second solo in this series, will require the soloist to play in both 6/8 and 2/4 time signatures. The soloist will have to distinguish between a triple feel for the first three lines followed by a brisk, duple feel in the 2/4 remaining section. Range should not be an issue with this solo as the highest note is an Eb4 that occurs several times. The lowest note, Bb2, occurs only once in the solo with a majority of the range being an octave between Eb3 and Eb4. Only a handful of accidentals are sprinkled throughout the work allowing for a tonal, melodic theme for each section. While the tempo is slightly slower than Ruby, more eighth notes will have to be played in this selection.
