In the trombone community, the French composer Joseph Guy Marie Ropartz is most known for his Piece en mi bemol. In this work, Andante et Allegro is more common among trumpet and baritone/euphonium players but is equally suitable for the trombonist. The first half of the work is a slow, lyrical melody that asks for the soloist to exaggerate expression. The faster section of the piece will challenge the soloist to maintain a consistent tempo with dotted-eighth/sixteenth notes and triplets heavily prominent throughout the rest of the piece. The very end of this work will also test the soloist’s endurance as sustained half notes lead into an arpeggiated pattern of triplets leading up to a G4 and ending with a triumphant C3.
