Joseph Barat’s Andante et Allegro is a standard for advanced high school or early college students. One of the few selections that is listed on all seven association lists, this work challenges the soloist with techniques such as playing 32nd triplets off a tied note, interval jumps at quick tempo, eighth-note triplets at a brisk tempo. Although played as one, continuous piece, the first movement allows the soloist to push and pull the music with arpeggiated triplets as well as scalar-like patterns flowing through the key of Bb minor. The second portion, “Allegro,” moves to Bb Major introducing a facet of technicality throughout the range of the instrument. The work is also a test of endurance with the penultimate measure ending on a Bb4 after a racing run of triplets. The entire work builds to a climactic ending that can certainly be a pleaser for both the performer and the audience.
